Protecting your tax data just got a major upgrade. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has officially launched the "Verify Call" feature within the ATO app, giving you a real-time way to confirm if a caller is truly from the tax office.
How it works: If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from the ATO, follow these steps:
Open the ATO app and log in (using myID is recommended for the highest security).
Select the "Verify Call" option.
Check: A confirmation notification should appear within 30 seconds.
The Gold Standard: If no notification appears, the call is a scam. Hang up immediately.
Why this matters: ATO Assistant Commissioner Anita Challen notes that as scammers become increasingly sophisticated, it is harder for taxpayers to distinguish between a genuine contact and a fraud. This tool puts the power back in your hands.

The ATO Security Trio: This new feature strengthens a suite of protections available in the app:
Verify Call: Real-time confirmation of ATO callers.
Real-time Alerts: Notifications of key changes to your account.
Account Locking: An added layer to prevent unauthorized access.
Stay Vigilant: If you suspect you’ve shared sensitive information with a scammer, contact the ATO’s dedicated line at 1800 008 540.
